Back In The Days Of OLD SCHOOL OAKLAND
1954–1991 | As Seen Through My Eyes
This is not a history book written from a distance. It is Oakland remembered from the inside.
Through vivid personal stories, Frederick Mickey Williams takes readers back to a time when neighborhoods raised children, friendships were forged on concrete streets, and life lessons came fast, hard, and honest. From Brookfield Village to Castlemont High, these stories capture the laughter, danger, discipline, faith, and community that shaped a generation.
This book is Oakland — before filters, before hashtags, before it changed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Frederick Mickey Williams
Frederick Mickey Williams was born in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and raised in Brookfield Village, East Oakland. A Castlemont High graduate, Vietnam War veteran, engineer, and lifelong Oakland resident, his life spans some of the most transformative decades in the city’s history.
This book is not fiction. Every story is lived, remembered, and told exactly as it happened — from childhood mischief and neighborhood legends to moments of fear, faith, and survival. His storytelling style is raw, humorous, reflective, and deeply human, preserving memories that would otherwise be lost to time.
