Brotherhood in Old School Oakland was forged not just in laughter but in loyalty, trust, and shared experiences. Growing up in the neighborhood meant that you learned to stick by your friends, no matter the situation. We didn’t know it then, but these moments were about more than just mischief, and fun. They taught us the value of brotherhood.

One of the most meaningful lessons came from a fight I had with my older brother, Junior. I never won, but it was in those moments when our dad would say, ‘Go learn some sense,’ that we learned the real meaning of brotherhood. We didn’t always get along, but we always had each other’s backs when it counted. After a fight, we’d stand in front of Dad, arms around
each other, and come up with something to say. Even though it wasn’t always sincere, it was a way to keep the peace and maintain that bond. My Dad abhorred family fighting.
